SUNDAYS / TUESDAYS / THURSDAYS
Donald Baker
Donald Grijalva Baker is a trombonist, composer, and improviser based in the Bay Area and Santa Cruz Mountains. Originally cutting his teeth as a youth with the Kuumbwa Jazz Honor Band, he now recently graduated from San Jose State University, earning his Bachelors of Music in Jazz Studies. His playing is informed by the work of J.J. Johnson, Curtis Fuller, Grachan Moncur III, and the rich history and lineage of Black American Music. He will lead the night with standards, underrepresented jazz classics, while accompanied by the remarkable Robert Jackson on piano.
WIRELESS
In his early teens, Wireless Lovebird began his career in music scoring for the theater. Over two decades, he honed his characteristic style through composition and improvisation for ballet. Once at the piano, his every performance accumulates, as if post storm or snow melt, into a rivulet atop a sierra, whose descent toward the ocean is a product of shifting dreams and gravitational anomalies throughout a shared environment, and ultimately, trenchant examinations of ancient tectonic activity. He is an epic storyteller in a wordless language, and if you care to have another drink, his sets generally continue anywhere from 3 to 8 hours without rest.
